Open Tuning Grant

Dec 3, 2020, 2:37 PM

to Lily, Mary, Jane, Mayssan This person got to us through Jode Roberts. I explained to him that his group needs to deal with the insurance on their own. Other than that, it seems like a fit. Agree/disagree? Please hit reply all when you respond. J.

Dear Centre For Local Research Into Public Space Board Members,

I am writing to you with an important request. We are hoping your organization could be a trustee for Open Tuning Free Music Festival in order for us to apply for the ShareLove TO grant.

We are a grassroots volunteer run organization. We are small, we are not incorporated and we have a mandate to not accept corporate for profit funding, sponsorship or advertising. Our festival is open and free to all.

Open Tuning Music Festival occurs once a year in June from 2pm-8pm we have live music simultaneously on approx 20 different locations throughout one neighbourhood. Front porches, alleyways, sidewalks, driveways and parks. We transform public and private spaces into live music venues. This is all done by volunteers and paid for by crowdfunding. We rent sound equipment for all the locations and provide volunteer sound technicians as well. Up till now the musicians volunteered their time. However considering how hard the arts and musicians have been affected by the pandemic, this year we want to pay the musicians for their time. This is why we are applying for grants and would love to partner with you. We would be happy to include info about your organization on our website. Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have?

Jan.14, 2021, email from the city

Good morning,

Congratulations on your successful ShowLoveTO grant application. We hope that you are keeping healthy and safe during these difficult times.

As representatives of community organizations, special events, performing arts organizations/venues involved in producing festivals, events, and cultural activations in Toronto, you are receiving this email to bring awareness to current information that may impact your operations as the COVID-19 situation continues to develop within the province and in our city.

Effective Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 12:01 a.m., the provincial government has issued a stay-at-home order requiring everyone to remain at home with exceptions for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise or for essential work. This order and other new and existing public health restrictions are aimed at limiting people's mobility and reducing the number of daily contacts with those outside an immediate household. In addition to limiting outings to essential trips, all businesses must ensure that any employee who can work from home, does work from home.

This order includes: No indoor organized public events and social gatherings, except with members of the same household (the people you live with). Individuals who live alone and single parents may consider having exclusive, close contact with another household to help reduce the negative impacts of social isolation.

The limit for outdoor organized public events and social gatherings, must comply with requirements on physical distancing and face coverings: 5 people outdoors and masks should be worn outdoors if you are unable to stay 2 meters (6 feet) from another person.

As well, the City of Toronto has extended the cancellation of City-led and City-permitted outdoor major events through March 31, 2021 and all outdoor special event permits during this time period are cancelled. This includes festivals and other large gatherings held at outdoor sites managed by the City or other public locations, such as roads, parks and Civic Squares. No new permits will be issued until there is further direction on mass gatherings from Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health. Please note the update regarding outdoor major events as noted on the City of Toronto website under the Events Section drop-down.

We understand the disappointment for many of you that may have planned to host your event in the coming weeks, however it is important that we all follow public health guidelines and stop the spread of COVID-19.

Additional information on workplace safety measures can be found here.

If you were planning to host an event between January 14 through March 31, 2021, please advise us of your updated event date information.

Thank you all for helping to end COVID-19 and we will update you with information as it becomes available.

Stay safe,

ShowLoveTO

We do not need to send in new plans as our event is not happening during the period mentioned.

Our plans will not be updated until we are close to the summer and have a clearer picture of what will be happening then.

March 11, 2021, email from the city

On March 8, 2021, the Province of Ontario moved into a less restrictive grey zone which has mostly impacted the retail community. Under the grey zone, in-person shopping is permitted for all retail stores with stringent capacity limits. Essential stores like supermarkets and pharmacies have a 50 per cent capacity limit in this stage, while all other stores have a 25 per cent capacity limit. We remind you that no ShowLoveTO in-person events are permitted at this time.....

Hello, our charitable organization, the Centre for Local Research into Public Space (CELOS), accepted a grant of $2500 for the Open Tuning Group to offer music in public places. With all the rules and constant changes, it's become too complicated. We had passed the grant on to Open Tuning, and they have now returned it. Please let me know where to send the cheque.

May 18, 2021

Hi Chris, I'm forwarding you the email I got from Collin Joseph re your ShowLove grant. We spoke on the phone briefly and he said it would be good if you'd call him -- the city is thinking of extending the grant to 2022 because of the uncertainty with the rules etc. this year. I said I couldn't speak for you, of course.

June 8, 2021, from Chris to Jutta

Hi I was wondering if you would be able to hold on to the funds for now in case we do figure out a way to use them before the deadline?

From Jutta: Of course.

NOTE: According to Facebook, Open Tuning had a virtual "Free Music Festival" on June 5. https://opentuningfestival.wordpress.com/2021/05/01/open-tuning-music-festival-2021/

May 20, 2022 from Chris to Jutta

Unfortunately due to covid numbers continuing to rise a decision was made to not have it this June and instead to continue to wait and see. We may be able to do a scaled down version last minute or perhaps in the early fall and if that doesn’t happen then we will have to wait another year.

May 30, 2022, Chris to Joseph Collin

We still have not had our festival due to covid. CELAS has our funds. Should they be returning it to you now I guess.

June 14, 2022, Joseph to Chris

Hello Chris, We understand the effects COVID has had on the live entertainment/events sector, and it's unfortunately you were not able to host your event. The cheque can be returned to the address below.

CITY OF TORONTO EDC FINANCE Attn: Labora Fajardo 8th Floor, Metro Hall 55 John St. Toronto ON M5V 3C6
