Oct. 28, 2020: special comparative report

Toronto Public Health count: As of 2 p.m. on October 27, 27,530 positive COVID-19 tests in Toronto have been reported to Toronto Public Health. TPH says this means there are 321 new positive tests (but subtraction from yesterday gives 304.) TPH also reports that only 25,919 of those are confirmed cases, giving 313 confirmed new positive tests. The others (1611) are listed as probable.

Number of people currently hospitalized: 140. Yesterday's report was 131. TPH says this is an increase of 20 from yesterday. Really. My inquiry to the TPH media contact about these mystifying numbers got no response, but then my city councillor's office asked the city's COVID RESPONSE TEAM, and they wrote back:

The reason the hospitalization numbers don't neatly add up is because we don't separately report on those discharged. We are most interested in new hospitalizations day-to-day and the current numbers of people hospitalized.

So the next question is: ''"does that mean that 11 people were discharged yesterday and 20 more were admitted?

Today's Ontario PH reported increase in hospitalizations is 0, but Toronto reports a net increase of 9 more covid patients in hospital for the same period. Why did it not show up in the total-for-Ontario numbers?"''

Number of deaths: 1,358 -- listed as a 5-person increase from the day before. Since the province as a whole counted 5 covid deaths, that must mean all of those deaths were in Toronto.

Ontario Public Health count for Toronto:
As of 2 p.m. Oct.27, total number of COVID-19 positive tests for Toronto (cumulative): 25,895

New positive tests for Toronto are listed by OPH on Oct.27 as 299 -- today's reported total minus yesterday's reported total. That number doesn't match up with either Toronto PH total new cases (321) nor Toronto PH total new confirmed cases (311). From Toronto PH:

Regarding the difference between the city and provincial reports, the province only reports confirmed cases, whereas the City reports confirmed and suspected cases. Additionally, provincial numbers may reflect different times at which data are drawn.

It's true that the Ontario PH numbers are drawn up at 10.30 a.m. and the Toronto PH numbers come out at 2 p.m. The Ontario PH confirmed cases are only 24 less than the Toronto PH confirmed cases. Getting warmer, but not really reliable.

Oct. 29, 2020

Toronto Public Health count: As of 2 p.m. on October 28, 27,961 positive COVID-19 tests in Toronto have been reported to Toronto Public Health. TPH says this means there are 447 new positive tests. TPH also reports that only 26,340 of those are confirmed cases, giving 429 confirmed new positive tests.

Number of people currently hospitalized: 127. Yesterday's report was 140. TPH says this is an increase of 8 from yesterday. I asked about this puzzling math, and the city's COVID RESPONSE TEAM, wrote back:

The numbers reflect new hospitalizations day-to-day and the current numbers of people hospitalized. The difference between the numbers means that those persons [from the previous day] are no longer occupying a hospital bed.

So presumably it means that some patients were discharged and some died and some others were admitted.

Number of deaths: 1,362 -- listed as a 4-person increase from the day before.

Ontario Public Health count for Toronto:
As of 2 p.m. Oct.28, the total number of COVID-19 positive tests for Toronto (cumulative): 26,315

It's true that the Ontario PH numbers are drawn up at 10.30 a.m. and the Toronto PH numbers come out at 2 p.m.

Number of people currently hospitalized: 127. Yesterday's report was 127. TPH says this is an increase of 9 from yesterday. I asked about this puzzling math, and the city's COVID RESPONSE TEAM, wrote back:
