G.H. Wood Grant Report 2015 to February 29, 2016

Citywide
Skate lending:

- Followed up with the NHL Players' Association and obtained 20 sets of loaner skates/gloves/sticks/helmets.

- Submitted a grant application to RBC for skates – not successful.

- Submitted an application to the Dr.Tom Pashby Fund for 50 helmets. The grant was approved but redirected to City of Toronto. City staff kept 30 helmets in their offices and placed 20 with the Dufferin Rink skate loan in February 2015. By in January, all the helmets had disappeared.

- Prepped and organized 110 pairs of loaner skates (painting, sharpening, numbering, organizing into numbered bins).

- Contacted every city councillor individually to let them know about the skates, followed up all requests for more information etc.

- Coordinated loaner skates for the following venues in 2015 and 2016:

- Cedarvale Rink, Councillor Joe Mihevc's Social Skating Party 2015 to celebrate the opening of new rink change room: we brought loaner skates

- Feb 14th, 2015: Family Skate day at Morningside Natural Ice Rink

- Feb 21st, 2015: Centennial College international students skating party, Feb.21, 2015

- March Break At-Risk youth skate day: Scarborough Civic Centre: March 19th, 2015

- Irving Chapley Rink Skating Party hosted by Councillor Pasternak Jan 31, 2016

- Greenwood newcomer youth class skating party, Feb 11 2016

- The Grove School Refugee Family skate day, Feb 25/27 2016

Outdoor kitchen

- Further upgrade to MacGregor outdoor kitchen so that it was used all summer by staff. It is now ready to be mobile when necessary.


Tandoor and fire-cooking events:

- publicized the offer of free portable tandoor sessions in public spaces

- arranged for Utano Yo to come to Toronto from Japan to work on the 2015 "Tandoor on the road" community food programs.

- June 6 2015: Regent Park oven opening celebration with tandoor

- Sept. 25 2015: Harbourfront: Tandoor used for public naan baking at "Foraging" art opening

- Sept.30 2015: Regent Park oven "pizza day" and charcoal cooker demonstration

- October 4 2015: MacGregor Harvest Festival: Tandoor used for making naan, also campfire cooking

- October 9 2015: Thorncliffe Park tandoor workshop

- November through February: phone calls and emails to help coordinate possible uses for Thorncliffe Tandoor oven and potential for raising money through food sales. Meeting with Thorncliffe Park Women's Committee to assist with incorporation and interim tranfer of trustee to Foodshare


bake ovens support

- September 14/15 2015, put on a public oven repair workshop at Dufferin Grove with New Jersey baker/farmer/oven builder Jonathan White. (Note: city Parks staff were invited but none came)

- late September/ October: visits, discussions, documentation at other oven locations: Edithvale Community Centre oven, Lawrence Heights (John Polanyi Collegiate Institute) school/community oven, Alan Carlisle Community Garden oven

- October 24, 2015: participated in oven workshop at Black Creek Community Farm

- Nov.1 - Dec.14 2015: Making a case for saving the Christie Pits oven, including correspondence with the city councillor, with Parks officials, with original oven funders, and with other oven users. Oven not destroyed -- yet.

- Dec.3, 2015: meeting with Sorauren Park "Wabash Building Society" board about their planned community bake oven

Neighbourhood

- Gardening partnership continued, with Kristen Fahrig (artist in the park at MacGregor). CELOS became the trustee for a City of Toronto Livegreen grant to the MacGregor Park Arts Club. The club incorporated as The Botanicus Art Ensemble.

- The food garden has beds at wheelchair height and there is added awareness by staff, but the rest of our plan (consistent consultant, increase in usage by disabled people) has not worked out up to now.

Dufferin Grove

- Late winter/spring: Dan’s Table: various meetings to work out design, building of tables, installation, planting of seeds and plants, maintenance, communication with park users and staff

- May 8, 2015 contracted cob-builder Georgie Donais to come in from Collingwood to do a 10-year maintenance inventory of the cob courtyard cafe

- later May - coordinated cob courtyard repairs and the installation of a new cob kitchen counter by Parks technical staff

- June 20, 2015: put on a celebration dinner for new sitting area, also to fund-raise for oven repairs

- spring/summer: had various meetings with skate park carpenters and users to discuss skate park renos

- May 2015: coordinated planting of donated cherry trees at park

- June 2015: funded Skateboard pad improvements via honorarium and materials cost

- July/August: Met with the farmers' market manager to work out broadening paths at market and improving market food.

- Oct.3, 2015: put on "Randy's dinner" in the rink house for skaters to remember Randy and do a show-and-tell for the skate donation

Documentation (print and web)

- transferred ownership to new server of our website (that was somewhat complicated)

- reorganized and added content to: dufferinpark.ca, cityrinks.ca, publicbakeovens.ca, celos.ca, macgregorpark.ca (that last one is archived, but we'll need it again)

- followed up and added financial content

- published six newsletters plus one summary report about city rinks including the ones we work with directly.

- mounted photo and content displays for Harbourfront tandoor event, the building of the cob courtyard and the wading pool (at the playground)
