Toronto Public Health Covid 19 summaries, February 2021

Feb.1, 2021

As of 2 p.m. on Jan.31, 87,644 positive COVID-19 tests in Toronto have been reported to Toronto Public Health since yesterday. TPH says it's an increase of 961.

NOTE: On Feb.1, the Ontario PH site says that Toronto Public Health is migrating to the provincial data system, CCM, which is why "additional records were reported for Toronto Public Health today, resulting in an overestimate of the daily counts." Ontario Public Health gives the Toronto case count for Jan 31 as 84,907, with an increase of 886. Not a match yet.

Number of people currently hospitalized: 397 The previous report was 431. TPH says this is an increase of 1. (Of these, in ICU: 105. Previous: 109. Intubated: 79. Previous: 81.)

I asked about the puzzling math in this section, and the city's COVID RESPONSE TEAM wrote back:

The numbers reflect new hospitalizations day-to-day and the current numbers of people hospitalized. The difference between the numbers means that those persons [from the previous day] are no longer occupying a hospital bed.

So perhaps it means that some patients were discharged and some died and some others were admitted. But only the new admissions are specified.

Number of deaths: 2434 -- listed as an 18-person increase from previous day. Previous day: 2416

Feb.2, 2021

The Toronto Public Health website has all its most recent positive-test-and-illness-information put on hold for today (relating to Feb.1). Their announcement shows all their indicators either "put on pause" or "technical issues." From the Ontario Public Health website:

NOTE: "Toronto Public Health has now migrated all of their data to the provincial data system, CCM. This migration has impacted today’s daily counts. Most notably, TPH’s case count is negative following the identification of duplicate cases as well as data corrections to some fields (e.g., long-term care home residents and health care workers), resulting in an underestimation of today's cases. In addition, case counts for other PHUs may have been affected by system outages related to the migration. As a result, we anticipate fluctuations in case numbers over the next few days."

The Ontario Daily Epidemiologic Summary gives today's cumulative case count as 84,688 (yesterday 84,807) with minus 119 new positive tests.

Feb.3, 2021

As of 2 p.m. on Feb.2, 85,132 confirmed positive COVID-19 tests in Toronto have been reported to Toronto Public Health since yesterday. TPH says it's an increase of 444.

NOTE: On Feb.1, the Ontario PH site says that Toronto Public Health is migrating to the provincial data system, CCM, which is why "additional records were reported for Toronto Public Health today, resulting in an overestimate of the daily counts." Ontario Public Health gives the Toronto case count for Feb.2 as 85,132, with an increase of 444. This is the first time the positive-test numbers have matched (Toronto vs. Ontario report) since Sept.23 2020.

NOTE: Every item below is footnoted "interpret with caution."

As of 2 p.m. on Feb.3, 85,716 confirmed positive COVID-19 tests in Toronto have been reported to Toronto Public Health since yesterday. TPH says it's an increase of 584.

NOTE: On Feb.1, the Ontario PH site says that Toronto Public Health is migrating to the provincial data system, CCM, which is why "additional records were reported for Toronto Public Health today, resulting in an overestimate of the daily counts." This is probably resolved by now (Feb.3) but the web page still has its warning sign "interpret with caution."

Number of people currently hospitalized: 342 The previous report was 352. TPH says this is an increase of 26. (Of these, in ICU: 79. Previous: 89. Intubated: 55. Previous: 60.)

As of the Feb.1-3, 2021 data migration, the numbers of positive covid tests now match the OPH numbers again. The TPH web page says that the migration will be completed on Feb.8. For now, the TPH web page still has its warning sign "interpret with caution."

Feb.11, 2021

As of 2 p.m. on Feb.10, 88,621 confirmed positive COVID-19 tests in Toronto have been reported to Toronto Public Health since the beginning of covid counting. Toronto Public Health says that this is an increase of 400, but the previous TPH count was 88,518. That was listed as 423 since the last report. But the province's count said 88,512 new positive tests, 393 higher than the day before.
This arithmetic makes no sense. The OPH numbers for Feb.10 are 88,624 and 112 new cases.

Number of people currently hospitalized: 419 The previous report was 426. Toronto PH says this is an increase of 18. (Of these, in ICU: 94. Previous: 97. Intubated: 59. Previous: 60.)

Number of deaths: 2534 -- listed as an 8-person increase from the last report. Previous day: 2535

These numbers are a mess. Apparently there is still an ongoing data transfer issue.
